In one sense, since JD seems to have lost any recollection of the intervening timeframe post-break up, this terrible event gives them a ‘second chance’ at getting things right. Bill and crew start to wonder if this is more than just a hate-crime … a crime of passion? For Robert … having JD back in his life seems a mixed blessing. Robert’s health insurance is listed for JD despite their relationship having broken up more than a year ago. As readers are gradually introduced to suspects who may have committed the brutal criminal act (resulting in one JD Ryan being hospitalised with retrograde amnesia secondary to head injuries), we get the character of Robert Lemos – a hotshot successful lawyer despite coming from the ‘wrong side of the tracks’. For me, the most intriguing aspect here is that Bill Turner has secrets to hide – both from himself and from his workplace/social settings. However, much of the storyline covered does not come from Bill (investigative) POV so if readers are looking for a comprehensive detective procedural read – you will be disappointed.

The banter between Bill and his take-no-hostages female detective partner is snappy – the blockages when coming up against departmental bias and prejudices are realistic. The police procedural aspects are fairly well done (if a bit plodding). The opening chapter introduces Detective Bill Turner investigating a brutally violent act outside a gay club against two of its patrons. Publisher's Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: Anal play/intercourse, male/male sexual practices, masturbation, violence. This story is a whodunit. But if they survive the investigation, they just might find love in retrograde. And as the detectives track down the killer, Robert helplessly waits for JD to recall the truth of their relationship and leave him yet again. Even JD's returning memory seems to conspire against Robert. Robert's best friend, police Captain Gabe Lara, seems to feel that Robert is better off without JD. Detective Bill Turner, who seems to have too personal an interest in JD, pegs Robert as the primary suspect in the shooting. It's the miracle Robert's been hoping for. He remembers their love, and seems determined to reconcile. As JD slowly regains his memories, he recalls everything except the circumstances of the murder, and the reasons why he left Robert. Robert rushes to JD's bedside to find him recovering from the gunshot wound but suffering from retrograde amnesia. JD is in critical condition and the man who was with him is dead. Then one rainy night, he gets a call that his ex has been beaten and shot in a parking lot outside a gay dance club. “In the year since JD Ryan, Robert Lemos's life partner, packed his bags and moved out, Robert has been in a painful daze, anesthetizing himself with work.
